Henry was the second of four children born to William More and Catharine Hasbrouck More. He was raised at New York City where his father was engaged as a book-keeper for a leather merchant. Henry was a clerk at Brooklyn, New York when he married to Elizabeth Cockburn on 19 June 1856. They made their home at that place where their first child was born. The family relocated to Chautauqua County, New York about 1863 where their second child was born. The family returned to Brooklyn about 1864 where their last three children were born and where Henry was engaged as a dry goods store clerk. Henry and Elizabeth were the parents of five children; William More, James Kierstad More who died in infancy, Antoinette C. More, Henrietta Peck More, and Edwin William More.
