William was the youngest of four children born to William More and Catharine Hasbrouck More. William's father died when he was but five-years old and he was raised by his mother at New York City. William married to Mary Alida Walker on 19 July 1865. They made their home first at Brooklyn, New York where William was a life insurance agent. They relocated to Philadelphia about 1880 where he went into a partnership under the firm name of More & Van Uxen, assuming the General Agencey of the New York Life Insurance Company for the State of Pennsylvania. He sold his interest in this endeavor in 1886. He spent a year in Europe with his wife during this time. He and his wife traveled to Europe several times over the next few years, including a visit to Scotland. Upon settling back into his life in Philadelphia, he began a position of General Agent with Home Life Insurance Company. William and Mary had no children.
