William married Elizabeth McMichael on 23 Mar 1842 at York, PA and they had 6 children, Mary E., David John, Matthew, Elizabeth Norwood, William H. and Edward. All born before the Civil War. He enlisted in the UNION PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEERS 1st Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry (30th Volunteers)and became a Sgt. and later became 1st Lt-30th Regiment PA Reserve Corp. Co. D, under Capt.Geo. Hess. Later he was promoted to Capt. and then Brevet Capt. in March of 1865. After the war he work as a Conductor for the PA Central Railroad and was killed by a passenger train coming from Philadelphia. His death date in the City's death record is when he was buried. He died on the 25th of Oct according to the family records and Army records.
