Julius Ranum was born to Jacob and Carrie (Sande) Ranum on May 16, 1909 on the family farm in Leads Township near Chandler, MN. His mother passed away when he was just 13 months old. He then began living with his grand uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Erick Larson in Hadley, MN until he was five. On June 14, 1914, his father remarried, so Julius moved back with him where they moved to Lincoln, NE until March of 1918. They moved back to the farm near Chandler where he attended grade school at the District 39 school, known as Stofferan School. He then attended and completed his education at the Chandler High School. He also attended the Trinity Lutheran Church in Chandler where he was confirmed in December of 1924. Following his education, Julius began farming with his father. Julius was united in marriage to Minnie Johnson at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Chandler. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm across from George Conradi, which they farmed for four years. They were then invited to supervise a Church farm near Butterfield, MN by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. They accepted this invitation for eight years until moving to Lake Wilson, MN. They lived there for one year, then purchased a home just south of Chandler where they lived for 20 years. In 1978, they moved to Slayton, MN where he continued to live until becoming a resident in the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda, MN on January 8, 1997. On January 30, 1998, he died there at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 14 days.
Julius was the President of the Meal Site, Slayton Senior Citizen's Center in Slayton. He also enjoyed spending time with the elderly in the nursing homes. During his earlier years of retirement, Julius helped with the Census in the Butterfield and Chandler, MN areas.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife Minnie Ranum of Slayton; two sons: Arnold and Carol, Mankato, MN, and Gary and Nancy of Spirit Lake, IA; one daughter, Carol Johnson, Boulder, CO; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.
