Shortly after the death of her husband, Rose Engle and her young daughter moved to Houston, Texas, to be near her two brothers, Joe and Lee. She attended Sam Houston Normal Institute (now Sam Houston State University) and obtained her teaching certificate. She taught in the Houston ISD for many years, then tutored students in her home for many years after that. The Engles had one son named Paul who only lived about 6 months, and one daughter, Margaret. Margaret had no children but her husband, John L. de Brueys had a daughter from his previous marriage.
