He rivaled Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin and John Barrymore in popularity with film audiences during silent screen era. He was one of the most paid Hollywood stars of his time. Hayakawa was a remarkable man and he lived a remarkable life. He was an actor, producer, author, martial artist and an ordained Zen monk. He died from a blood clot in the brain complicated by pneumonia.
