Staff Sergeant Charles W. Mershon, mess sergeant of Company G, called his cooks and helpers together last week, announced that they were going to decorate the mess hall. Formerly a bare pine board interior, the mess hall now sports torch-seared grain patterns, tan walls, white oilcloth on the tables, and fancily draped condiment shelves. The final touch, curtains and drapes for the windows, have been ordered and expected soon.

Man's Death Is Ruled Accident
Military honors were bestowed Monday at funeral services for a member of Company G, ONG, who accidentally shot and fatally wounded himself at his home in New Petersburg about 8:45 A.M. Friday.
Dr. J. M. Byers, Highland County Coroner, returned an accidental verdict in the death of Sgt. Charles W. Mershon, 33, who died almost instantly after a charge from a 12-gauge shotgun struck him in the chest and emerged under his left arm.
His father, Charles P. Mershon, told authorities that he went outside to get some coal and on his return, found his son wounded and dying in a chair.
Sgt. Mershon returned last Saturday from Ft. Meade, Md., where he attended a regular Army mess management course prior to entering federal service with his unit next month. He graduated second highest in his class at the school.
Relatives reported that Sgt. Mershon borrowed the shotgun Thursday night from a neighbor, Harry Caplinger, with the intention of going hunting Friday. It is believed that Mershon was cleaning the gun in preparation for the hunting trip when it was accidentally discharged.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Murray Funeral Home in Greenfield. Burial was in Gilboa Cemetery.
The son of Charles P. and the late Ella Cox Mershon, Sgt. Mershon, in addition to the father, is survived by two brothers, Harry of New Petersburg and Joseph of Greenfield and three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Hull and Miss Grace Mershon of New Petersburg and Mrs. Ruth Bluff of Columbus.
