Elisha was born in Gibson County, Indianathe son of Daniel and Comfort (Marvel) McDowell. He was was married first to Delila Taylor on 27 March 1846 in Vanderburgh Co. IN. They had 5 children - 3 sons and 2 daughters; their first Charles Daniel McDowell being my great grandfather. Upon the death of Delilah on 6 May 1874, Elisha married Dorcas Elizabeth Upton on 23 Aug 1874 in White Co., IL. They had 7 children. The Terre Haute Cemetery was originally called McDowell Cemetery as Dorcas provided a section of her land for this purpose. Having moved to Illinois when the War of the Rebellion began, he nobly responded to his country's call by enlisting July 25, 1861 in Co. C, 40th Illinois Infantry and rendered faithful service until honorably discharged June 18, 1865. Brother McDowell joined the Christian Church when a young man and died in faith. He was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The funeral was preached in the home and he was buried by the lodge of which he was a member.
