THIS IS NOT A DUPLICATE MEMORIAL FOR Susannah Stamper Burton
This is a memorial for Susanna Stamper Burton in Burton Gap, the cemetery she is buried in next to her husband John Plesent Burton, Many other family members are buried at this location. Including my ancestor Zachariah Burton's first wife, Ruth Core and several of his children with Ruth and also with his second wife Matilda Tegarden.
This cemetery, Burton Gap, is West of Mitchell and is located in a field off of Hwy. 60 along the tree line that runs along the railroad track. it was near the family home. This cemetery is no longer in use, burials stopped when the railroad came. The family then started burying their dead in the "new family cemetery" located just 3/4 of a mile south of the original cemetery. This is known as Burton Cemetery, or the Burton Burial Grounds and is located on Burton Cemetery Road.
The other memorial listed on Find A Grave, #40965556 is for the Burton Burial Grounds, located on Burton Cemetery Road. This is the location where the Memorial (or cenotaph) placed by the children of John Plesent and Susannah, and the stone for his service in the Revolutionary War placed by the SAR.
This information has been published in numerous newspaper articles and in The History of Lawrence County. The cenotaph was voted on by The Burton Family Association in 1877 and erected in the new family cemetery in 1878.
The descendats of John Plesent & Susannah Stamper Burton continue to gather annually at the new cemetery the first weekend of August for over 100 years for The Burton Family Reunion.
I was contact by someone informing me this was a duplicate, but the member has her messages disables so I am unable to provide this information to her. I have personally been to both cemeteries and have pictures taken in both of the gravestones and the memorial. Also have copies of several newspaper articles and the book History of Lawrence County, Indiana. If anyone wishes proof please feel free to contact me, I will gladly send you the source information which you may verify, or you may visit both of the cemeteries yourself to see the graves
Attaching a picture to this memorial as reference only..... It is a portion of the memorial to John Plesent & Susannah in the Burton Cemetery it states that both John and Susannah are buried in Burton Gap.
