Frankford Coker was delivered by a midwife during what he referred to as the "dog days of August" 1911, to parents John and Phebe (Carney) Coker, in their home located twelve miles outside of Dover, Delaware. He attended Christian preparatory school on Maryland's Eastern Shore that was later incorporated into the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Frank then attended West Virginia State College where he majored in physical education and graduated in 1935. After he left school he came to Washington, DC, where he worked as a licensed funeral director for John D. Watson until he entered the Army in 1942. Frank served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Buffalo Division of the 92nd squad, where he was in charge of a medical platoon of 42 men. He served three campaigns in Italy and received the Army's Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Ribbon and other commendations. Frank then returned to Washington, DC, and resided at 907 R Street, NW. Frank later met and married Clara "Kluttie" Hamilton on April 6, 1950. Frank, Clara and her mother Pearl Hamilton (Nana), then moved to 1209 Quincy Street, NW. Frank's daughter, Francine Elaine, was born of this union. He worked as a part-time funeral director, a painter and drove a taxicab prior to serving as a Federal Protective Officer with the General Services Administration (GSA), assigned to CIA Headquarters. Sorrowfully, Clara, a devoted wife and mother, passed away on December 11, 1958 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, where he will be interred.
Frank retired from GSA in 1971. It was at GSA that Frank met and later married Eva Stewart in 1966. Eva's daughter, Eva Ann, and Francine became sisters. Sorrowfully, Eva, a devoted wife and mother, passed away on July 7, 2002. Frank missed Eva terribly but was fiercely determined to carry on. Since Eva's death Frank spent many weekends and outings at Francine's home in Lusby, Maryland. Frank loved the country, the outdoors, cigars, Maryland's blue crabs and Francine's dog Precious. Frank believed in exercise of the mind and body and moderation in all things, which he credited to his good health and long life.
Left to celebrate Frank's life of 91 years are his daughter Francine Elaine Anderson-Borders, her companion Michael Saunders, daughter Eva Ann Lockhart and husband, Clarence Lockhart, grandchildren Kathleen and David Anderson, Clarence Jr. and Sharawn Lockhart, a niece Evelyn and her husband Bert Schroeder, other family members and long-time and devoted friends, some of whom are Pocahontas Sewell, Maeola Jones Butler and Joe Haynes.
Frank's favorite saying was "Man was born to die, he was born of this earth and to the earth he shall return." Frank had accepted the Lord Jesus Christ long ago and believed in his teachings. Frank received part of his reward here on earth as he was in good health and of sound mind when he was called home peacefully by the Master.
