Dorothy McCown was the daughter of Carl and Delle Gardner McDonald. She attended the School of Music for Children at Coker College for many years and was a graduate of Hartsville High School, where she served as the first president of the National Honor Society. Following her graduation from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, she furthered her studies in Europe. Mrs. McCown was a housewife and member of Darlington Presbyterian Church.

Surviving were her son, William B. (Gail) McCown III of Darlington; three granddaughters, Melissa M. (Scott) Saby of Raleigh, N.C., Elizabeth M. (James) Harris of Florence and Meredith L. McCown of Darlington; two great–grandsons, Crayton Scott Saby and William McFarlin Saby.
Mrs. McCown was preceded in death by brothers, Carl McDonald Jr., John A. McDonald and sisters, Edith M Ingram, Louise M. Byerly and Emma M. Keifer.
