William was the s/o Joseph Nathaniel Greene and Margaret Graham. He was one of 13 children. He married Catherine Rodgers on November 07, 1841 in Rutherford County, NC.
4 children were born of this union: Jesse Nathenial, Marietta Jane, Pinkney L and Zachary Taylor Green. At age 41, this farmer joined CSA CO A, 16th REG INF NC. as 3rd Sgt and promoted to LT.

While his unit greathered at Strawberry Plains before the battle he became sick. Records show: ource: North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865 Page 13
CO A, 16th REG INF NC
William Green 3rd Lieutenant
Resided in Jackson County where he enlisted at age 43.
Appointed 3rd LT to rank 4-27-1861. Present and accounted
for until he resigned on February 27, 1862, by reason of
"general prostration of the system from Typhoid Fever and
chronic brochitis".

A note from me:
After years of research by many we can now prove that William died of disease in 1862 in Strawberry Plains, TN
and is buried in the Strawberry Plains Cemetery there. It was common practice to muster out one who had died to close the record..so our date of 5 October 1862 is as close as we get.
