Thomas Mathews was born about 1840. Using the 1850 and 1860 US Censuses, I believe I have located Thomas' parents. In 1850, there is a Matthews family in Smyrna township with a son Thomas, who is 10 years old. It is known that Thomas was 20 years old in the 1860 census, living in Smyrna township.

There is a record of the marriage of Thomas Mathews and Sarah Earhart in Jefferson County, Indiana on August 28, 1859. The couple is also found in the 1860 census, living in Smyrna Township, Jefferson County. Thomas is 20 years old. A son, John was born to them on August 5, 1867. The 1870 Census has been diligently searched for Thomas or Sarah Mathews, to no avail. One interesting entry was found, however. Sarah had a younger brother named Charles Earhart, who would have been 20 in 1870. In Marion Township, Jennings County, that year, there is a record of a Charles Earhart, 20, Farmer, b. Indiana. Listed with him are Sarah Earhart, 27 & John Earhart, 2, both b. Indiana. Evidently, this is what happened. Thomas Matthews died between 1867 and 1870. The date of his death and place of his burial are unknown at this time. Sarah and her son John then went to live with Sarah's younger brother, Charles. In 1870, the census taker assumed Charles and Sarah were man and wife, and listed them as a family with the last name Earhart.
