Mary was the youngest daughter of David Sturgis Penfield and Mary Elizabeth Hodges-Penfield. Mary taught at Fiske University in Nashville, Tennessee for three years. On May 19, 1899 she married Rev. Stephen Alison Norton. They had one child:
*Dorothy Penfield Norton (1900–1972)
