From his obituary in the Daily National Intelligencer (DC) on 30 Jun 1842: Departed this life at the U.S. Navy Yard in this city by the explosion of detonating shells on Monday, the 27th instant, Mr. Thomas Barry, a master of the U.S. Navy, aged 63 years. His funeral will take place this day from his late residence in the Navy Yard, at 12 o'clock. Officers of the Army and Navy and the friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend.

Diary of Michael Shiner dated June 27 1842 re death of Thomas Barry and David Davis. Transcription below. John Sharp

The death of Thom mas Barry a gunerin the united states navy and David Davis they wher killed in washington navy yard by the explosion of a shell on the 27 day of June 1842 on Monday they wher three Men within ten Months killed in washington navy yard may the allmighty grant that ther souls are at rest for we are all neglectful of the things that are most [needfull?] for our souls welfare for when we part from each other for our daily occupation we dont know weather we will ever Return in life again Mr thomas Barry that Wer a guner in the united States Navy Resined in 1826 and went to South America and went thir with commodore Porter and after the Hon John Quincy adams administration wher out commodore Porter came home to the united states and were sent as Minister by the Honorable Major general andrew Jackson to Constantinople and the commodore Died ther and Mr Barry came home in time and Received his warrant again in the united states navy By the influance of commodore John Rogers and Commodore Charles Morris Mr Barry was a professor of Fier Works

Monday 27th June 1842

All this day clear and warm weather wind light from SW 94 blacksmiths on Anchor Chain cables New Engine shops Steamer Union 70 Plumbers on water tanks galleys Iron & Brass casting &c 20 block makers making blocks & deadbolts 4 Joiners repairing stable yard fences 6 ship carpenters on the Steamer Union, 107 machinists on various jobs Engineers laborers & Ordinarymen Painting wood working iron &c carts hauling wood, ion &c At 6 AM Capt J Pendergast returns to the yard after sent to the West , at 5 PM an Explosion took place in the Laboratory in the Yard by which Mr Thomas Barry Gunner of the Yard & David Davis was killed and also very much injured in the building Corp Leskey of the Marines severely wounded

Tuesday 28th June 1842

All this day clear and warm wind from the west Mechanics same as yesterday except the joiners employed making Mr. Barry & Davis coffins laborers and Ordinary men employed in transporting stores.
