Carl S. Barker, 90, passed away at Legacy House Wednesday, March 21, 2007 of dementia and causes incident to age. He was born January 14, 1917 in Willard, Utah to Alonzo and Nora Shephard Barker. He was raised in Willard and graduated from Box Elder High School, after which he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Alaska. While in the army, he worked on the Al-Can Highway and was later deployed to the Aleutian Islands. He served from 1940 to 1945. Upon his return from serving our country, he started his lifelong career at Continental Baking Company (Wonder Bread) as a route salesman where he retired in 1982. It was here he met his eternal companion, Gwendolyn Chipman. They were married June 16, 1947 in the Logan LDS Temple. They have six children, JoLynn (Greg) Bell of Fruit Heights, Sharon (Dale) Stephens of Washington Terrace, Lorin (Liliane) Barker of Salt Lake City, Janis (Mikel) Vause of Ogden, and Kevin (Lisa) Barker of Phoenix, AZ. Carl was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various capacities including bishop of the Washington Terrace 8th Ward and counselor in the Terrace View Stake presidency, where he was greatly loved and respected. Carl and Gwen served a mission in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Mission. He was active in community service and was a member of the Washington Terrace City Council for many years. One of many highlights for Carl in the community was the creation of the The Barker Exercise Trail in Washington Terrace, which was named in Carl and Gwen's honor. Throughout his life, Carl had a great love for sports. As a young man, he played second base for the Willard baseball team. During his military service he participated in football, baseball, and boxing. He spent numerous hours with his family participating in all their sporting activities. After retirement, he coached "Grandpa's girls" softball team, which included several of his granddaughters. He is survived by his children; 24 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; as well as a brother, Dean Barker of FL; and sister, Ruth Marrone of Willard, UT. Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Gwen; one son, Brett; brothers, Earl, Harry, and Rex Barker; and sister, Doris Younger. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 26, 2007, 11 a.m., at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may meet with the family Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Monday 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist's Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road, where military honors will be accorded. The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff at Legacy House and Horizon Hospice for the competent and loving care of their dad.
