A long and colorful life in Lansing from the time it was a village of a few houses and stores in the woods ended for Mrs. Monica Crist, 97, of 129 East Kilborn street, Wednesday afternoon, when she died at her home following a long illness.
A pioneer resident of Lansing, coming to Michigan from Germany 73 years ago, Mrs. Crist often told her children and grandchildren about the early days when Indians used to come often to the doors of local settlers. Mrs. Crist, then a young woman, said she used to go hide under the bed when she would see the Indians coming, fearing they might turn out to be savages. But their mission was always the try to trade their simple but beautiful beads for food and other supplies from the early white residents, she recalled.
HUSBAND DIED 43 YEARS EARLIER.
Mrs. Crist and her husband (Michael Crist), who preceded her in death 43 years earlier (1899), had the house on East Kilborn street built for them some 69 years ago when they moved here from Ann Arbor.
Survivng is a foster-daughter, Lillian Meyers (Peter) of Detroit, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Crist was a member of St. Mary Cathedral Altar Society. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary cathedral on Saturday (October 26, 1942) at 9 o'clock.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery."
Monica was the daughter of Cyriak and Brigitta (Eisle) Mahlenbrei and twin sister to Hieronymus "Jerome" Mahlenbrei.
