Abraham Bell was born in Middle River Neck in Baltimore County to John P. Bell, who according to an 1898 article in the Baltimore Sun was an army lieutenant during the war of 1812, and his first wife, Sallie Parks, who died shortly after Abraham's birth. Either in 1810 or 1816, John died, along with Abraham's full brother, leaving behind two daughters and Abraham's half brother William W. For a few years, Abraham went from house to house before eventually moving to Baltimore to make a living for himself. It was there that he married Sarah Elizabeth McFadden of Harford County. The couple had at least five sons and one daughter: Edwin, J. Austin, Josiah Vardon, Samuel K. and John Archer Bell, plus a daughter whose name is unknown.

In 1898, Abraham became reacquainted with his half brother William W. Bell, who informed him that he was actually six years older than he believed himself to be. Abraham died six years later at the age of one hundred, in the home of his son Josiah Vardon.
