Born Jozias Nieuwenhuize, he was the son of Hubreqt Nieuwenhuize and Pieternella Sandee, the husband of Johanna "Jennie" VanderBurght, and father of Abraham and Herbert Newhouse. Grandson of Cornelius Nieuenhuise and Jozina DeMul, and Pieter Sandee and Janna Stroosnijder.

His father, Hubregt Nieuwenhuize, died on December 20th, 1883 in Yerseke, Netherlands.

In 1905, Joseph Newhouse, aged 24, born March 1881 in Holland, was living in Lodi Township, Bergen, New Jersey, with his wife, Jennie Newhouse, aged 22, born March 1883 in Holland, and son, Hubert Newhouse, aged 1 month, born in New Jersey, and his mother, Petronella Newhouse, aged 53, born December 1851 in Holland. Joseph was shown to be employed in a chemical works.

In 1907, his mother, Pieternella Niewenhuis, married Emand VanBiert in Lodi, Bergen, New Jersey.

In 1910, Joseph Neuhaus, aged 29, was living in Garfield, Bergen, New Jersey, with his wife, Jennie Neuhaus, aged 27, and son, Herbert E. Neuhaus, aged 5. Also living in the household was boarder, Cornelius Vander Blas, aged 17. Joseph was shown to be a laborer in a chemical works.

On September 9, 1917, his mother, Pieternela Van Biert (nee Zandee) and her husband Lemand Van Biert, died suddenly in Passaic, New Jersey, both in their sixty-sixth year. The funeral was held from the home of their daughter, Mrs. Cornelius Van den Hundel, 233 Burgess Place, Wednesday, September 12, at 2 o'clock from the North Side Christian Reformed Church. Interment was in Lodi Cemetery.

On September 12, 1918, Jozias Nieuwenhuize, aged 37, born March 23, 1881, registered for the draft during World War I, stating that; he resided on Atlantic Avenue, West Sayville, New York; was a bayman employed by Blue Points Company of West Sayville, New York, was a naturalized citizen; and gave the name of Janna Nieuwenhuize, of Atlantic Avenue, West Sayville, New York, as his nearest relative. He was shown to be of medium height, medium build, with gray eyes and gray hair.

In 1920, Josias Nieuenhuise, aged 38, born in Holland, was living on Atlantic Avenue, West Sayville, Islip, NY, with his wife, Johanna Nieuenhuise, aged 36, born in Holland, with their children, Herbert Nieuenhuise, aged 14, born in New Jersey, and Abraham Nieuenhuise, aged 7, born in New York. He was shown to be an oyster culler.

In 1930, Joseph Newhouse, aged 49, was living at 52 Atlantic Avenue, West Sayville, Islip, NY, with his wife, Jennie Newhouse, aged 47, and son, Abraham Newhouse, aged 17, a fisherman on the Great South Bay, and boarder, Peter Newhouse, aged 52, a construction carpenter. He was shown to be a fisherman on the Great South Bay.

In 1940, Joseph Newhouse, aged 59, was living on Atlantic Avenue, Islip, NY, with his wife, Jennie Newhouse, aged 57. Joseph was shown to be a bayman.

Obituary - Joseph Newhouse died last Saturday evening at his home on Atlantic Avenue, West Sayville. He had been in poor health for some time, but had been confined to his bed only the past three weeks. Mr. Newhouse was born in Holland in 1881, came to this country in 1901, and settled in Garfield, N.J. For the past 35 years he had made his home in West Sayville, and had followed the bay. He was a member of the First Reformed Church and the West Sayville Fire Department. He is survived by two sons, Herbert and Abram, and one granddaughter, Jeanet Newhouse, all of West Sayville. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from his home. Officers of the fire department acted as pallbearers and interment was in Union Cemetery.

Estate - The estate of Joseph Newhouse, also known as Yozias Neiwenhuize, of West Sayville, who died January 25, amounts to about $3,000 in personal and $5,000 in real property, according to the petition. Tessie Newhouse, daughter-in-law, Atlantic Avenue, West Sayville, and the residue passes in equal shares to Abraham and Herbert A. Newhouse, sons, both of Atlantic Avenue. The sons are appointed executors.
