Served in the civil war as a confederate soldier and body servant to his owners two sons, John and Ed Watkins.

Attended over 50 confederate reunions before his death, and founded the Alabama Ex-Slave Association in 1913. Member of the United Confederate Veterans, Wilcox Camp. Friend of Gen. Wheeler and the Wheeler family. Served as a minister and community servant after the civil war, working to assist indigent confederate soldiers and their widows in recieving pensions.
