Started second family with son Cassius Sackett in 1857.William was born to Charles Sackett and Sally Bascom Sackett of Bergen, NY. Mercy Canfield was married to William Sackett by her father, the Reverend Asher Sackett on December 28th, 1848. Immediately after their marriage, the young couple moved into the groom's farmhouse in Bergen N.Y. where his parents resided, along with their other children. William continued to work as a laborer on his parent's farm. William had lived in Bergen his entire life, but in 1850 he went prospecting with his brother Noble out west. They settled in Eaton, MI, and William returned with his wife and quickly built a strong brick farmhouse on his property in 1855. 100 years later, their son Asher recounts his parent's difficult beginnings "My father William came here not later than 1850 to see this place and moved here in 51 or 52 on this place not a stick cut, but one baby girl with them and two more came and all died in Oct. 1855." In 1858, William was appointed treasurer of Sunfield Township, and would be appointed postmaster in July of 1862, and a Justice of the Peace in 1857, 1863, and 1875. They had many children, Samuel, Caroline, Mary, and Asher. By 1880, the woodland William and his brother had come across twenty-five years earlier had been made fruitful. William had 50 acres of tilled farmland, 17 acres of pastures, and 18 acres of woodland. He had two horses, five cows, six pigs, and gathered about 200 eggs each year. He harvested hay, clover seed, Indian Corn, oats, and wheat as well as 800 lbs of sugar from Maple trees. In addition, he had two acres of apple orchards.
