One of those granddaughter's, Corrie (Iverson) Rezachek shared: "Grandpa Schmidt died when I was young. Grandma raised my sister Alice and & I (my father & his second wife raised my sisters Ann & Bettie.) We grew up poor but never knew it. (Grandma) Mom was our inspiration. She kept us warm & well fed; she sewed all our clothes, cared for a large garden, did a lot of canning & preserving; stretching the money to give us a wonderful childhood. She was a tiny lady (less than five feet tall); hard working, kind, strict but gentle. She never said "I love you" but I knew it was true, from how she was to me & Alice."
