There appears to be a great deal of confusion related to the children of John S Fletcher.
The estate settlement clearly names the children except for two. The two missing in the estate settlement were a son James, born 1815, who died as an infant; and son John, born about 1821 who never married and had no children and died prior to his father.
The numerous pages of this estate settlement actually began in 1864, where all land and items owned by John S Fletcher are stated, taking up numerous pages. This leads one to believe that the paralyzing stroke occurred at that time. Beginning in 1870 there are numerous other pages related to the final estate settlement. Also of note, his third wife, Susan, is mentioned both times.
Therefore, there are two times when the children are mentioned, once in 1864 and again in 1870, confirming the same children.
List of children:
Children of first wife Elizabeth Savage:
1.Jerusha Fletcher Lance and husband
2. Heirs of William Fletcher
3. George Orr as guardian for Mary Fletcher Tow (This is the wording in 1864. In 1870 it simply states Mary Tow. It should be noted that in 1850 Mary Fletcher Tow is listed on the census with her husband and children as "insane." In 1860 she is living with daughter Rachel Tow Shipman and son-in-law and near her sister, Rebecca Fletcher Osborne. Her husband died prior to 1860. Daughter Rachel Tow Shipman died in 1869. Mary Fletcher Tow cannot be located on the 1870 census or any following census. A grave site has not yet been located.)
4. Rebecca Fletcher Osborne and husband, Jeremiah
5. Martha Fletcher Lance and husband
6. Margaret Fletcher Sales
7. Joakim Fletcher (Charles M Fletcher for Joakim Fletcher)
8. Jane Fletcher Orr and husband George Orr (see above with Mary Fletcher Tow)
9. Elizabeth Fletcher Orr and husband Samuel
10. Heirs of Ann Fletcher Gallamore
11. Lemuel Fletcher (reads Charles M Fletcher for Lemuel Fletcher)
Again, note that John and the infant James are not mentioned in estate and probate files.
Children with second wife, Martha McBrayer:
1. Sarah S Fletcher Cunningham
2. Samuel Fletcher (reads Charles M. Fletcher for Samuel Fletcher)
3. George W. Fletcher
4. Andrew Erwin Fletcher (Please note that he did not marry until 1890 and had NO children. This is NOT an Andrew C Fletcher who numerous people have confused with him. They are two entirely different people.)
5. Amanda Fletcher Plumblee
6. Charles M Fletcher
