Thomas Stewart's parents immigrated from Ireland to Butler Co., PA when he was just 2 years old. He worked as both a farmer and a doctor, having earned his Doctor of Medicine from Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1857. Dr. Thomas Stewart was the first of five generations of doctors, followed by Dr. William Graham Stewart, Dr. William Blair Stewart, Dr. Sloan Giffin Stewart, and Dr. Douglas Grey Stewart. He loved to keep bees and had a heavy Irish accent all of his life.

Thomas married Susannah Graham, 18 Jan 1840. The exact number of children they had is not known, but it could have been as many as 11. Only 5 are known to have reached adulthood.

Thomas died from paralysis and liver failure.
