Mary was the oldest of William and Catherine Smith's eight children. She arrived in Quebec with her parents and siblings in 1884 aboard the ship "Lake Winnipeg." The family settled in Newport, Rhode Island and it was in Newport's old St. Joseph's Church that she married Charles P. Burns in 1892. They had five children:

Mary Veronica "Molly"
Katherine "Kitty" (Henry E. Flynn)
Irene Augusta Cecelia (Louis Spielman Murphy)
Charles J. (Margaret M. Brennen)
Evelyn C.
