Henry served during the Civil War in Capt. Martin's Company (E) of the Osage County Regiment, Mo. Home Guard from June 22, 1861 to December 20, 1861 as a Sgt. He enlisted in the army again on Apr. 1, 1865 and was discharged Oct. 26, 1865 serving in the 14th Mo. Cavalry as noted.
Amanda died in 1886 and on Sept. 5, 1889 he married Isabel Ann (Setser) Dickerson, the widow of Henry P. Dickerson. Henry Johnston died of cerebral conjestion at his home, though he suffered from a number of ailments (including a major hernia, suffered when his horse fell while fording a stream near Vermillion, Kansas in 1865).
