Joseph Kupcha , whose 29 years with Rohr Aircraft included an assignment as the company's Far East representative, died of heart failure Tuesday in his Chula Vista home. He was 78.
From 1960 to 1962, while based in Tokyo, Mr. Kupcha bought metal parts from Japanese steel makers to be used in the construction of U.S. aircraft.
After joining Rohr in Chula Vista in 1949, Mr. Kupcha worked a variety of jobs, primarily in purchasing.
Born in Whiting, Ind., the son of Slovakian immigrants, Mr. Kupcha returned years later to the Slovakian town where his father was born. While exploring his roots, he found a street that bore the family name, Kupcha .
The first member of his family to enter college, Mr. Kupcha attended Purdue University for two years. He earned a degree in business administration in 1941 from West Virginia Institute of Technology, where he played varsity basketball.
He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army in 1942. During World War II, he served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, the Mediterranean island of Corsica, France and Germany.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Kay Ray, of Honolulu, and Dorothy Leland, of Davis; two sons, Ralph, of Fountain Valley, and Bruce of Yucca Valley; and six grandchildren.
