Lois Bright Gilbert's relationship to John Abbott is unknown. Detectives found her photo in his locker at the firestation after he was killed.

Daughter of Doctor Frank Bright of Madison County, NC and later of Dublin, Georgia ('Doctor was his given name), Lois was known for her daring behind the wheel of an automobile. Her suicide at the grave of Johnny Abbott came as a great surprise to all, including her husband, who claimed that Lois had appeared not to know Johnny when he brought the fire truck to their garage for repair. Johnny's friends and fellow firemen said differently; they had seen Lois in Johnny's company frequently. It is possible that they mistook Mary Powers for Lois Gilbert.

Lois drove her race car down to the cemetery, dropped her wedding ring on John Abbott's grave-the only ring of several that she was wearing-first chloroformed herself and was made sick by it, then used a gun to shoot herself. Graveyard workers found her body lying across John Abbott's grave early the next morning.

There are those who believed that she was a victim of morbid dementia, brought on by a fear that she'd lost the fight against tuberculosis, which killed her mother and her brother, Frank Bright, Jr.

WOMAN KILLS SELF AT FIREMAN'S GRAVE

Body of Mrs Hal M Gilbert Found in Atlanta Cemetery With Revolver in Hand

Atlanta, Ga, Feb 2 - The dead body of Mrs Hal M Gilbert was found early today lying across the grave of Fireman John Abbott, who was shot and killed by his wife several days ago after confessing to a love affair with Miss Mary Powers. Mrs Gilbert had shot herself through the heart after an attempt at suicide with chloroform, according to the police.

The sexton of Greenwood Cemetery where Abbott was buried, said he had noticed Mrs Gilbert visit Abbott's grave daily, placing flowers on the mound and that Saturday afternoon she was left kneeling and weeping by the graveside. When her body was found today she clasped a small revolver in one hand and a chloroform saturated handkerchief in the other. To one side was found her wedding ring, where she had dropped it after removing it from her finger.

Mrs Gilbert was a daring automobile driver and had participated in local races on several occasions.
