"Vermont State Treasurer. He was trained as a merchant and store clerk in Worcester, Boston and Montreal, and moved to Woodstock in 1791. Swan was active in several business ventures, including the Windsor and Woodstock Turnpike Company, the Vermont State Bank, and a pearlash factory. He also held several local offices, including town Postmaster and Justice of the Peace. In addition, Swan served in the militia and attained the rank of Major. In 1796 he became Windsor County Clerk, a position he served in until his death. In 1800 he was appointed State Treasurer, and he served in this position until 1833, longer than anyone else has held it."
