Jesse was the first Clerk of Perry and kept the position as long as he lived and his grandson, Ira Davidson succeeded him. According to the Dickey Diary interview of John S. Combs 9Son of Jeremiah Combs and grandson of Danger Nick Combs. Jesse was killed by the explosion of a keg of powder "Elijah lived in Perry. He was General of the Militia. He had sons: Jesse, Elijah, and Jackson. Josiah Combs was killed by Joe ADKINS was the son of Jesse. Jesse was Clerk of Perry [Co, KY] first and as long as he lived and his grandson, Ira DAVIDSON, succeeded him. I have seen him (Gen. Elijah) in his regimentals commanding at the muster. He (Jesse) was killed by the explosion of a keg of powder in Shade DUFF'S store in Hazard. Someone snuffed a candle and accidentally threw the snuff in the keg of powder under the counter. DUFF was son-in-law of Combs. Both DUFF and Combs were killed. DUFF was killed instantly. Combs lay a good while"
Jesse and Polly had the following children:
Manerva Combs 1821 m Ezekiel Brashear
Maryan Combs 1822 m Austin C. Godsey
Sarah Combs 1826 m James Harvey Hunley
Susan Combs 1826 m John Richmond
Alsie Combs 1827 m Joseph Davidson & Granville P. Combs
Louise Combs 1830 m Henry Fields
Josiah Combs 1831 m Polly Ann Mattingly
Dr. Jess Combs II 1836 m Elizabeth Lacey
John D. Combs 1838 m Sallie Turner
*William Wallace Combs 1839/40 m Elizabeth Johnson
Margaret Combs 1841 m James Fitzparick
Nancy Combs Fields 1843 m. William Fields
*William's relation to this family is uncertain. He may be a natural son or a adopted son.
Note*** apparent conflict as to whether it was Shadrach Duff, Sr. or Jr. who was killed by the explosion. There is now a question as to whether the explosion occurred in 1873-1874 when Jesse Combs died or the late 1820s (research in progress), in which case it is not known which Combs died in the explosion with Duff.
