Jazz Musician. Born Arthur Edward Pepper in Gardena, California, he was a jazz alto saxophonist and clarinetist. He began his career in the 1940s, playing with artist Benny Carter, Stan Kenton and by the 1950s, he was recognized as one of the leading alto saxophonists in jazz. His playing style was often referred as the West Coast Jazz musical movement and he finishing second to Charlie Parker as Best Alto Saxophonist in the Down Beat magazine Readers Poll of 1952. Some of his many albums included "Art Pepper Meets the Rhymn Section," "Modern Jazz Classic," "Gettin' Together" and "Smack Up." During the 1960s and 1970s, he toured Japan and was a member of Buddy Rich's big band. He died in Los Angeles, California.
