The body of a 40 year old uncie woman who had been missing for more than 24 hours, was found in White River near Helen Drive, on the southeast side Saturday aftrnoon.
Nancy LaWall, 2130 Cherokee, had been missing after her burning car was discovered along the river bank around 1 a.m. Friday. The fire, which destroyed her car, was extinguished by city firefighters.
Delaware County Coroner Larry Cole said today rs. LaWall had been at a party at the Murpah Shrine Club on East ain, and had left around 11 p.m. Mrs. LaWall, who was intoxicated, according to Cole, refused offers of friends who wished to drive her to her Indiana Village home.
Mrs. LaWall's car had become stuck at the end of Helen Drive, in either some mud or wood mulching, Cole said. Apparently her car caught fire as she was attempting to free the vehicle.
Cole said evidence indicated that the victim's coat caught fire, and he theorized she might have run to the river to douse the flames.
In trying to climb from the river, rs. LaWall apparently stumbled and fell, Cole added.
The temperature was in the low 20's that night, Cole said, and Mrs. LaWall died of exposure.
Her body was found by Detective Sgt. Mike Austin, who was walking the river bank Saturday afternoon.
The Cowan Elementary School, where Mrs. LaWall was a 2nd grade teacher for 11 years, will be closed Wednesday to allow teachers to attend her funeral.
Mrs. LaWall was born in Muncie and graduated from Central High School and Ball State University. She later received a masters degree in education from Ball State.
Mrs. LaWall, was a member of the First Baptist Church, the American Business Women's Gold Association and Ladies Silver Bowling League.
She is survived by her husband, Carl; a son, Brett, at home; her mother, Mrs. Juanita Chestnut, Muncie; a brother, John D. Chestnut, Westfield, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Meeks Mortuary with RFev. Daniel Mattox officiating. The burial will be announced later.
Friends may call at the mortuary from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.
