Early Wednesday morning, Dec. 24, 1913, John Sell, a pioneer of Wisconsin, died at his residence on Elm Street after a long illness.
John Sell was born in Hesse-Cassel, Germany on February 3, 1828 and in 1830 came with his parents to America, locating in Medina county, Ohio. Mr. Sell's father was a soldier in Napoleon's army and participated in the campaigns of 1805 and 1807. He accompanied Napoleon in his famous expedition into Russia in 1812 and was in the command of the brave Marshal Ney. At the battle of Leipsie Mr. Sell ws wounded by a lance in the hands of a cossack soldier and taken prisoner.
He was married in 1818, the family coming to America in 1830.
John Sell grew to manhood in the state of Ohio and on Oct. 15, 1852, was married at Cleveland, Ohio to Miss Catherine Usinger. In 1853 Mr. and Mrs. Sell came to Wisconsin, locating on a farm in Concord, where they made their home until 1893, when they moved to this city, since residing here.
On Oct. 15, 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Sell observed their sixtieth wedding anniversary and nearly all the children and grandchildren were present at the family dinner. The event was also quietly observed this year. Mr. Sell is survived by his wife and ten children: Mrs. Kate Steinkraus, Mrs. Rachel James, John and Fred Sell of Milwaukee: Mrs. Susie Sanders of Albany New York: Mrs. William Pennow of Summit: Jacob Sell of Concord: George Sell of Waukesha: Mrs. V James and Edward Sell of Oconomowoc,.
The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon with burial in LaBelle cemetery.
