"John Stalter Passes Away
Another Civil War Veteran Crosses Great Divide
John Stalter, Civil War veteran, passed away this morning at 6:30 o'clock, at the home of his daughter Mrs. Delphia Dawson, 509 Tenth street. John Stalter was born on the 18th day of February, 1834 at Perry county, Ohio. He was married to Jane Bryant in Wyandot county, Ohio at an early age, and the young couple made their home in Wyandot county, Ohio until 1850 when they moved to Franklin county, Kansas. Here they lived on the ranch of John Brown, the noted abolitionist. On John Brown's last trip through Kansas he called one night at the Stalter home on his way to visit his brother in law, who lived nearby. during these troublesome times John Stalter was busily engaged in fighting border ruffians while his wife looked after their home, family and farm. Mr. Stalter fought in the State Militia during this time on the Kansas Missouri line. While living in Franklin county his home and contents were destroyed by fire. In 1871, with five living children, three of his children having died, he and his good wife moved to Cowley county by wagon to take up frontier life in southern Kansas. here they met with occasional hardships, which were interspersed with much good fortune. They were successful in accumulating land and live stock and owned a ranch which became famed for miles around. Prosperity was theirs for 15 years. In 1886-87 misfortune overtook them and in the bad turn in money matters they lost all of their property. However, John Stalter was a man of determination. He struggled bravely on and succeeded in accumulating an opulence. they moved to Woodward county, Oklahoma and from this place moved to Pacific Grove in 1903. John Starter's wife died in Pacific Grove California, in the year 1909. He is survived by the following children. Mary K Yarbrough, Delphia Dawson, Edwin R. Stalter, Frederick L Stalter of Pacific Grove; John W. Stalter of Monterey; George H. Stalter of Fargo Oklahoma; Elena [sic Elura] Snyder of Everett Washington. Funeral will be held tomorrow from Paul's undertaking parlors under auspices of Pacific Grove Lodge No 331 F. & A.M. of which he was a member. He also was a member of Lucius Fairchild Post G.A.R. (buried in El Carmelo Cemetery)."
