According to the 1850 Census taken on November 20, John F. Palmer, tailor, was living in Adams, Lenawee Co., Michigan. in the household of a Thomas James, who is also listed as a tailor.
Three days later, on November 23, 1850, he married Louisa K. Lovejoy, the daughter of Maj. Joseph Thacher Lovejoy; they were married in Addison, Michigan. Together they had 6 children.
In the 1860 U.S. Census, John F. and Louisa Palmer and their three children were living in Woodstock, Michigan. John's profession is again listed as "tailor." In July of 1863, John F. Palmer, age 38, registered for the draft; his residence is listed as Seneca, Lenawee Co., Mich.
John F. Palmer and his family moved to Hudson, Michigan, sometime after 1863 where he ran his own tailor business out of his home on the corner of Railroad and N. Church Street in Hudson. Reportedly, his father, John B. Palmer, was also a tailor.
John F. Palmer was a member of the M.E. Church. He died, age 79, in Hudson at the home of his daughter Lillie Philbrick.
From his Hudson Post obit:
"From his youth he learned the tailor's trade, at which he worked until his last illness. He was for many years in charge of the tailoring department of the John K. Boies store, and when that business was discontinued [1888] opened a shop of his own."
"His burial was under the auspices of the Masonic Order, of which he had long been a member."
