Antonio “Tony” Podeschi II, 88, of Taylorville died at 7:39 a.m. Friday, August 18, 1989, at St. Vincent Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Podeschi was born January 24, 1901 in Talamello, Italy, the son of Battista and Mary (Tomei) Podeschi. He married Mary Barra on July 9, 1924 in Taylorville. Mr. Podeschi immigrated to the United States in 1912. He owned and operated Taylorville Wholesale Grocery Company from 1922 to 1958. Mr. Podeschi was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are his wife, Mary; one daughter, Mrs. Norma Driscoll of Hinsdale; two sons, John (wife, Gwenith) Podeschi and Peter Podeschi, both of Taylorville; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul (wife, Bernardene) Podeschi and Pasquo Podeschi, both of Taylorville; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Sartore of Elmwood Park and Mrs. Anna Galli of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James Podeschi Sr.; one daughter, Barbara Podeschi; two grandsons, James Podeschi Jr. and Ronald Podeschi; one sister, Rose Fabbri; and two brothers, Joseph Podeschi and Ned Podeschi.

Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 21, 1989, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery. Connolly & McClure Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
