Mary Lillian Calhoun, 104, passed away March 15, 2009 at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born Dec. 11, 1904 to the late James P. Calhoun and Irene Clements Calhoun. After completing nurse's training at Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville, Lillian began her nursing career at the old Norton's Infimary in Louisville. She later began working at a hospital in Cincinnati and was there when her mother died suddenly in 1945. She immediately quit her job and returned to Curdsville to be a housekeeper for her father and to care for her terminally ill older sister. In less than a year a sister-in-law died so then, in addition to her father, she cared for 3 nephew's and a niece, the youngest of which was less than a year old. After a number of years caring for relatives and other elderly people in the community, Lillian resumed her nursing career at the then Daviess County Hospital from which she retired in 1970. After retirement she was a regular volunteer for many years at both the Elizabeth Munday Center and St. Stephen Cathedral, eventually moving to the Carmel Home, because of ill health. She was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral.
She was preceded in death by 4 brothers: Everett, Bernard, Arthur and Robert Calhoun. Five sisters: Eula Calhoun, Muriel Mattingly, Mary Clayton Alvey, Bessie Alexander and Estelle Murphy. Lillian is survived by a brother, Joseph E. "Bill" Calhoun, nephew, Gary Calhoun and his wife Beverly, who lovingly cared for Lillian during her final years. Sisters-in-law: Margie (Mrs. Bernard) Calhoun, Laura (Mrs. Arthur) Calhoun, Catherine (Mrs. Robert) Calhoun and numerous other nieces and nephews.
