The death of William Benedict occurred at 9:05 o'clock Saturday night, and was not unexpected, as he had received two strokes of apoplexy and had been confined to his home for several weeks, says the Tunkhannock correspondent of the Scranton Republican. Deceased was 69 years old on June 6, and was a native of Luzerne county, where he was born in the year 1825. He leaves a wife and two daughters - Mrs. Charles E terry and Mrs. H. F. Metcalf. Mr. Benefict was a practical farmer and business man and was prominent in matters political in the Democratic party. He was largely interested in the coal and iron industries in West Virginia, owning a controlling interest in the United states Coal and Iron Mining company which was its plant in the state of West Virginia, being for a time it's president, going out of the board of officers only this spring, when his health demanded it. He was a generous man and many acts of kindness and charity are credited up to him in the great beyond to which he has gone. The funeral has been set down for this (Tuesday) afternoon at 2 o'clock, services at the house and interment in Sunny Side cemetery. (Wilkes Barre Times, June 26, 1894.)
