John McKenzie May 19, 1895

Mr. John McKenzie died at his home near Black Earth Sunday, May 19th, 1895, from the effects of a fall in the barn that he sustained the previous Thursday. He was able to walk to the house with the help of his daughter and was not thought to be in a serious condition until Saturday evenlng. He had only just got over an attack of the grip which leaves everyone as it did him in poor condition to resist any fresh ailment.

Mr. McKenzie was born on Prlnce Edward Island in 1821, came to Chicago in 1845 and to Wisconsin in 1849. After working around Green Bay for a year or so he settled down in Blue Mounds and came with his family to Black Earth in 1865 and has lived on his farm there ever since. His wife was killed about nine years ago by the cars while crossing the track.

He leaves five sons and three daughters all grown up.

Mr. McKenzie served one term as county poor commissioner and for many years represented Black Earth in the Dane county board. In these positions as well as in other places of public trust which he has held he always acquitted himself in an honorable and creditable manner.

He will long be remembered as a valuable citizen, a good neighbor, and a vise and loving father.

The funeral, largely attended, took place at the house Wednesday,
May 22, Dt. Stodard officiating.
