Death of John Stine Last Night
One of the Town's Oldest Residents Passed Away- Was Mine Forman Over 40 Years
John Stine, pioneer resident, veteran mine foreman, devout Christian, died at his home, No 214 South Oak street, at 10 o'clock last night. Old age was the cause. Bowed down beneath the weight of years, he has journeyed to the presence of God whom he served a lifetime. He had gradually been sinking for weeks and death was expected.
John Stine was born in Eldred Township, Schuylkill County, July 12, 1831. He was the son of George and Catherine (EISENHART) Stine. His paternal grandfather, Anthony Stine, was a native of Alsace-Lorraine, and was one of the pioneers of Berks County.
When quite a youth John's parents moved to Sunbury, and later the young man became a resident of Llewellyn, where he was married on November 19, 1855, to Amanda Fisher, who died ten years ago. Shortly after the marriage the couple moved to Green Ridge.
Mr. Stine became a resident of Mount Carmel forty-one years ago and has lived here continuously ever since. He was made inside foreman at the Reliance colliery a few months after taking residence here and held that responsible position for a period of thirty-four years, or until about six years ago.
He was a skilled mining man, one whose counsels were listened to by those high in authority in the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Company, and when advancing years compelled him to relinquish his post his absence was keenly felt.
The deceased was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for more than half a century, and was one of the most valued members of Mount Carmel Lodge No. 630. He was one of the oldest and most influential members of Mount Carmel Lodge No 3778, F. & A.M. He became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church forty-five years ago, and was a consistent, regular and devout attendant at the various class meetings and church services.
Mr. Stine served several years as a member of the Borough Council. He was connected with many business and financial enterprises, and helped along many lines to build up the town.
Fifteen children blessed his marriage: Elizabeth, wife of Robert Camp, of town; W. Frank, of town; Ira H., deceased; Joseph F., of Sunbury; George W., of town; David E., of town; Alfred, deceased; Caroline, wife of William Startzel, of Audenreid; Sarah J. of town; John F., deceased, Miriam, deceased; Charles W., of Phillipsburg, NJ; Howard F., of Birdsboro, Pa; Millard L., deceased; and Edmond J., of town.
There are thirty-three surviving grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family is one of the best known in this section of the State.
The funeral will be on Friday, services at the south Oak Street home at 1:00 am. The 2:37 P & R train will be taken for interment in the Mount Carmel cemetery at Alaska.
