His parents in Crichton, Midlothian, Scotland were James Hardie and Jane MacLaren. He married Matilda "Mattie" Katherine Heidel on 9/30/1880 in Santa Clara, CA.

Funeral Services Held For William Hardie, 79, Veteran of Civil War

Funeral services were conducted yesterday by Atlanta Post of the G.A.R. for William Hardie, 79, native of Scotland and resident of the Oleander District for 43 years. Mr. Hardie died Monday(November 24th)at his home, 640 Yale Avenue. The body was cremated.

After serving as a sailor when a youth, Hardie came to the United States in 1861 and immediately enlisted in the Union cause. Following his discharge in 1867, he came to California and married at San Jose in 1880. He settled near Oleander in 1881 and moved to Fresno about four years ago.

Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Dr. Wallace E. Hardie and a grandson, Milton M. Hardie. Funeral arrangements were made by Stephens and Bean.

Note: William actually enlisted in the U.S. Navy in New York, in 1864. He rose to the rank of Captain and served on the USS Fore Castle and the USS Ayack.

William was proceeded in death by his son William Jr.
