Malcolm Waldie was the son of Richard Hamilton & Elizabeth (Allan) Waldie.

His birth record shows that he was born on 28 July 1863 in Woodhall, Garden Row, Bothwell Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. His death certificate shows that he was born on 8 July 1861 in Glasglow. His daughter was the informant on his death certificate, and his granddaughter also gave his birth date as 8 July 1861. She said that he always said he was born in Glasglow. (Bothwell Parish is about eight miles from Glasgow, so it's possible that both of the records are correct as to his place of birth.) It is very unlikely that he was born in July 1861 since his sister, Janet, was born 18 Aug 1861 (according to her birth record). It's more likely that Malcolm lied about his age when he arrived in the US (maybe to get work) and continued to use that date.

After his mother died (1867), Malcolm sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on the Elysia with his father Richard and his brother Walter. They arrived in New York on 29 Aug 1870. His brother, Peter, arrived in 1870, and his sister, Elizabeth, in 1875. His brother Peter lived in Perry Co., OH, and his brother Walter & sister Elizabeth Jackson Peeples lived in Roanoke Co., VA.

Malcolm married Margaret J. Price on 28 Sept 1882 in New Lexington, Perry Co., OH. They had four children, all born in OH, except Richard, who was born in MD:

- Richard Waldie (1884-1935)
- Maria Wilson Waldie Dunnett (1885-1947)
- Maggie Waldie Love (1887-1907)
- Elizabeth "Lizzie" Waldie (1890-1897)
