Engine claims old man's life
Strikes him on crossing and fractures his skull
Senses fail to warn him
Aged rag picker, once in carriage business, dies in hospital an hour after accident

Failing to notice a westbound passenger train, Richard Brown of No. 109 South Crouse avenue was struck and fatally injured by the train at 3:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon at South Crouse avenue and East Washington Street. He died an hour later at the Hospital of the Good Shepherd of a fracture of the skull.
Mr. Brown, who was 75 years old and hard of hearing, walked onto the tracks in front of the train. He was formerly engaged in the carriage business and for a number of years was a hack driver. Of late he had been picking up rags and papers in the street.
At the time of the accident he was crossing East Washington street from the north and was pushing a baby carriage. As he stepped onto the second rail the engine struck him, knocking him into the ditch on the south side of the street. He was unconscious when picked up and drying when he reached the hospital. The body was taken to F.W. Traugott's undertaking rooms.
Besides his wife, Mr. Brown leaves a daughter at Rochester.
The funeral arrangements have not been completed.
