August Schoel, esteemed farmer and stockman of the Alda community, passed away at his farm home, one mile northeast of Alda at 11:30 Friday, July 5, evening. Mr. Schoel had been in failing health for some time. Last January, he submitted to surgical treatment in an endeavor to improve his health, but after a slight recovery, gradually weakened. About one week ago, he became bedfast. Death came on peacefully.
August Schoel was born August 11, 1872, four miles southwest of this city on the farmstead of his pioneering parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schoel, Sr. He attended the country schools and grew to manhood on the old Schoel homestead. it was in this city that Mr. Schoel and Miss Emma Luth were united in marriage, March 29, 1899. They founded their farm home one mile northeast of Alda and that has been the continuous family residence.
Mr. Schoel was a lover of the soil, a heritage from his parents. Like them, he devoted his entire efforts to farming and stock raising, to the improvement of his lands and to the increase of the products of the farm. In boyhood he had experienced the hardships of a pioneer family, the many inconveniences, the inefficiency, and isolation of the farm from the city. In contrast, the Schoel farm is now an example of the modern farm. Despite his failing health, Mr. Schoel remained in active management of his farm in companionship with his son, Charles. Mr. Schoel was affiliated with the Plattedeusche Verein. Of a pleasant and most likeable disposition, he was widely known and respected.
He leaves behind his bereaved wife, his son, Charles; one brother, Charles Schoel of this city; one sister, Mrs. Albert Felske of this city and many other relatives. Preceding him in death were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schoel, Sr., three brothers, Henry, Fred and William Schoel; and one sister, Mrs. Henry Luth. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Livingston-Sondermann funeral home, Rev. C. B. Harman, pastor of St. Paul's English Lutheran church, conducted the services. Interment was in the family space in the Grand Island cemetery.
