On Monday evening of last week, John Givens, who resided north of Lodi, Parke County, died very suddenly. He had been sick for quite awhile with Bright's disease and confined to his room. At the time of his death he was sitting in his chair, and all of a sudden fell over on the floor and died instantly. His wife died the Saturday before. Comrade Givens was landlord of the Newport Hotel a few years ago, and was well known here by most of Co. K, 97th Regiment Indiana Volunteers. His remains were interred on the day following his death at the Silver Island Cemetery by the Grand Army Post of Lodi.
