He was an active member of the Democratic Party and was well known on the State and National levels in Democratic Circles. Mr. Kleas was a leader in the Presbyterian Church, serving in many capacities of leadership during his life time. He was a Ruling Elder in the Church at the time of his death and was the secretary of the Presbyterian Session. His work with the Brotherhood was also outstanding. He held the responsible position of Local Chairman and Vice Chairman of the General Committee and in 1919 he was honored by being named to cover a much wider area representing the men from New Orleans to El Paso and from Galveston to Denison. He also served as a member of the Texas State Legislative board of the B.L.E. as vice chairman.
Mr. Kleas retired as Engineer for the Southern Pacific Railroad after 50 years. He began working for the railroad as a fireman in 1902 after a year spent on his first job, with the South Texas Bell Telephone Company,
As a hobby he started building bird houses, following his retirement and as he became more adapt in the workshop, his houses became more intricate and the children over town became fascinated with the tiny houses designed and hung in the trees around his home. The children soon *named him "the bird house man" and began visiting him almost daily to check on his newest creations.
He was a member of the Wharton Masonic Lodge and the Alzafar Shrine Temple of San Antonio and a number of local civic clubs throughout the years. However his first loves were his family, his church and the Democratic Party and to these he devoted his entire time.
On 20 Jul 1920 he married Myrtle Merdith McFarland. They had two children:
*Marion Philice Kleas (1921-2005 )
*Robert Earl Kleas (1925- )
