Lifelong Juneau resident Sandy Johnson Sr. died May 16, 2005, in his home with family members by his side.
He was born to Maggie Obert Johnson and George Johnson Sr. on Feb. 22, 1926, in Hoonah.
He served from 1943 to 1946 in the U.S. Army and was a WW II veteran. He was discharged from the Army and employed at the Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital with Al Andersen Sr. and Alex Marks. He was a seiner on the fishing boat, Alberta, in Icy Straits Cannery outside Hoonah. He came to Juneau and worked at Columbia Lumber Sawmill alongside Joe Johnson Sr., Peter Johnson Sr. and Ronald James. Then he went back to Hoonah and fished seasonally on the Alberta, where he met his wife, Sylvia Kahklen Obert. They married May 31, 1953.
The couple moved to Juneau, where he started his 35-plus years of working in construction. Projects included the Egan Highway, the Federal Building, the Courthouse, North Douglas Highway and the Alaska Pipeline, to name a few. He worked alongside his son, Sandy Johnson Jr., John Wilson, Bill Horton, Ronald James and Bob Paulo.
His hobbies included fishing and hunting, watching the Seattle SuperSonics and WWF Wrestling. He enjoyed spending time with his family and telling stories to his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Maggie and George Johnson Sr.; his sister, Minnie Howard; his brother, George Johnson Jr.; and his brother-in-law, Robert Beirly Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sylvia Johnson; his sister, Katherine Grant; his cousin, Violet James; his son, Sandy Johnson Jr.; his daughters, Sandra Johnson and her husband Gary, Christine Johnson, Ernestine Bacon and her husband Greg, Kathy Johnson, Bernadine Johnson, Marsha Matlock and her husband Charles, and Penny Johnson; his 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be 6 p.m. May 20, at the Tlingit-Haida building. Funeral will be 11 a.m. May 23, at Northern Lights Church.
Pallbearers are Sandy Johnson Jr., Greg Bacon, Charles Matlock, Frank Kitajima Jr., Greg Bacon Jr., Dustin Bacon, Tylar Matlock, Nomer DelaCruz and Christopher Edgar. Honorary pallbearers are Ralph Knudson, Kenny Grant, George Grant, Stan Haldane, Charles Gamble, John Wilson, Bob Paulo, Sandy Lee Johnson, Jake White Sr., Francis Marvin and Anita Lafferty.
