Mattie was the daughter of pioneers who came to Kansas in 1857. She grew up near Neosho Rapids, received her early education there and later went to Emporia where she graduated from the Normal School. Later she taught school at Hartford before marrying Cary A. Bishop [on 05 Aug 1891]. She was active in the First Methodist Church, was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, and for many years was active in the Eastern Star.
