Hugh Poore was born in July 1774, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, son of George Poore, Sr. and Martha Fleming. The area where Hugh was born became Henry County in 1777 and Patrick County in 1791. According to Scurlock family history, Hugh accompanied his widowed sister Lydia Scurlock and family to Gallia County, Ohio in 1808, where he did surveying. Hugh moved his family to Gallia County, Ohio in 1811 to the area which became Bloomfield Township, Jackson County in 1816. He was active in politics and the Ohio State Legislature elected him as one of the three associate Judges of the newly formed Jackson County. Judge Hugh Poore was one of the leading men in Jackson County for a generation. He was married to Martha Hutchins (b. 1781) in Patrick County Virgina in 1798 and they were the parents of eleven children born from 1799 to 1821. He is the father of my ancestor George Poore who was born in 1802. Hugh died in Bloomfield Township in September 1829 and was likely buried there on his own farm.
