PAST PRESIDENT KEVIN CALEGARI REMEMBERED
Kevin J. Calegari, president of Dignity/USA from 1991-l993, died in San Francisco of AIDS-related complications on Sunday, February 12. He was 36.
During Kevin's term of office, Dignity completed the restructuring of its national board and increased its level of cooperation with other major Catholic reform organizations, including the Catholic Organizations for Renewal and the Leadership Council for Catholic Laity. In November of 1994, along with current Dignity/USA president Marianne Duddy and former president Jim Bussen, Kevin accepted the leadership award of Call to Action, the nation's largest and most broad-based Catholic reform group, on behalf of Dignity/USA. During Kevin's term as president, Dignity also mounted the Call to Justice campaign, a vocal and highly-organized response to a 1992 Vatican letter urging US bishops to work against civil rights protections for lesbian and gay people. In one highly-publicized incident, Kevin traveled to Rome and posted the document, along with a copy of the New Testament, to the door of a Vatican office in an envelope marked "Return to Sender." A similar action was taken a few days later at the Vatican embassy in Washington, DC
Marianne Duddy commented, "Under Kevin's leadership, Dignity took a more active role in the international Church, a role we are continuing to develop. His willingness to take a public prophetic stance against Vatican discrimination towards gay people was a real turning point in our movement. As a person, he was totally engaged in life, a passionate and compassionate individual, someone who intuitively understood the connections among various issues. We will miss him deeply".
Kevin became a member of Dignity/San Francisco in 1980 and served as co-chair of that chapter from 1989-1991. He was active at the regional and national levels of Dignity since 1983. He served on Dignity/USA's Sexual Ethics Task Force from 1984-l 989 and was a founding member of the Defenders, Dignity's outreach to the leather-levi community.
Kevin is survived by Tom Kaun, his partner of 11 years; Janet Cerni, his dear friend and primary care-giver; his parents, George and Lorayne Calegari of San Anselmo, CA; his sister, Joan Harrington, her husband, Tirn, and two nieces and a nephew, all of Sonoma CA; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins in the San Francisco Bay area; and Tom's parents, brother and sister.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 25, at Seventh Avenue Presbyterian Church in San Francisco, where Dignity/San Francisco meets. At its January 1995 meeting in Washington, DC, the board of Dignity/USA established the Kevin Calegari Leadership Award for outstanding leadership at the chapter, regional, or national level. Kevin and his survivors asked that contributions in his memory be made to Dignity/USA.

This photo of Kevin and Tom was taken in Hawaii in 1984 or 85. were smitten with Hawaii and were thinking about relocating there (Kevin was working there at the time). Alas, it was never to happen. I gave this photo my Mom and she had it sitting on her bedroom dresser for almost 30 years. When I was at my folks' house for Thanksgiving I saw the photo and decided to bring it "home" again.
